From a distance the cupcakes in the photo you see probably seem sweet, having been drawn by young hands in a moment of innocent artistic expression. Upon closer inspection, you would more than likely be saddened and shocked at the raw anxiety and fear written along with the rainbow colors. This art project was completed by children who have been the victims of sexual abuse and domestic violence. The idea of the project was to give the children an opportunity to take a bite out of their fears, thus the use of the cupcake art. No one had any idea just how deep their fears ran, ranging from the usual spiders, to the real fear of death. These are expressed concerns that you would expect to see from kids who have suffered trauma, but in looking at the state of our youth in general, it is alarming that similar fears are felt by young people across the spectrum. What is causing our children to be so fearful and stressed? There are many contributing factors, and in this week’s podcast we also discuss real solutions. It was my pleasure to interview children’s therapist, Shannon Erdmann. Shannon has many years of experience in therapy with young people and has witnessed a significant increase in anxiety in kids of all backgrounds. As always, where there is fear, there is also hope. Take a listen, and share your thoughts. It’s time to get serious about the mental health of children, because if we do not, then those same kids grow up to be adults with deeply rooted issues which are much more difficult to heal.
